Top Ten Favorite YouTube Channels
By Thomas Ward
I have never been one for Web surfing, but I do manage to spend a lot of time on social media sites like YouTube. As a matter of fact, three-fourths of my waking hours are spent browsing YouTube, whether it’s for clips from my favorite television shows, music videos to my favorite songs, or just downright hilarious insight from YouTube’s numerous “celebrities”. During my travels on YouTube, however, I have managed to create a top ten list of my favorite YouTube channels and wish to share them with you.
- Shavonne – If there’s anything I like on YouTube, it’s a beautiful song with a beautiful woman singing it, and Shavonne definitely fits that bill. You can tell from watching her videos that she is a free spirit and has a lot of fun performing the numerous covers that she features on her site, such as Britney Spears‘ “Womanizer” and the song “Eyes On You” from the Final Fantasy VIII video game.
- SXEPhil – While some may view him as a “douchebag with a camera”, Philip DeFranco (better known as sxephil on YouTube) is actually quite the comedic genius, putting twisted views on everyday events that we, the YouTube-viewing public, take for granted, like politics and celebrity gossip.
- Chris Pirillo – Chris, along with Leo Laporte, has been one of the largest influences on my career as a technology journalist and blogger. However, his most recent videos seem to stray from the niche that Chris has built around himself and the Lockergnome brand and have proven less interesting than usual. Nonetheless, his sense of humor (awkward as it may be) still earns him this spot in my top ten list.
- Household Hacker – The MacGyver of YouTube channels. They teach you how to take ordinary items, like Alka-Seltzer tablets and the PlayStation Portable gaming console, and turn them into extraordinary items, like giant lava lamps and portable chat viewer. Besides, they wouldn’t have been on Discovery Channel’s MythBusters if they weren’t cool, right?
- Ashley Tisdale – This star of Disney’s “Phineas and Ferb” and “Suite Life of Zack and Cody” is one of the few celebrities who actually graps what social media is all about. Instead of making attempts to go viral or enhance an image, Ashley uses sites like YouTube to address her audience and connect with them on a more intimate level.
- Jonathan Ian Mathers – If you haven’t heard of this guy, then you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years. He is the creator of the hit animated series “Foamy the Squirrel” and, in my honest opinion, a freaking comedy genius. It seems to me that he says what I’m thinking, but would never say in public.
- Rooster Teeth Productions – The hit machinima series “Red vs. Blue” has inspired not only a new type of film making, but has made traditional filmmakers reconsider how their films are made. Not only that, but they’re very funny individuals in their own right, writing and filming in live-action sketches that are filmed around their offices.
- BradmanTV – There’s nothing funnier than a fat guy singing parodies and just rambling on nonsense. His wacky (though sometimes hard to understand) antics, which usually happen through his live streaming show on Ustream.TV, makes each and every one of his videos an absolutely delight to watch.
- Mondo Media – Every so often, I do find myself feeling down and out and, when I do, I know that I can always turn to the creators of such popular web shows as “Dr. Tran” and “The Happy Tree Friends” for a quick pick-me-up. The humor in their cartoons are highly original and never fail to entertain, though most of their content is for mature audiences.
- The Mind of Ward – What? You didn’t think I was going to leave myself out, did you?

Tweet and Share Alike
By Thomas Ward
FileTWT, located at www.filetwt.com, brings file sharing to the Twitter social networking Web site, making it useful for people to find collaborators or get feedback on the documents they’ve created on their hard drive.
All you have to do is fill in your Twitter username and password, describe the contents of your documents, upload your file and, almost immediately, your file will be made available to your Twitter followers. The only downside to this is that FileTWT does carry a 20 megabyte limit, so be sure to optimize your document for storage on the site.
You can also sign up for a FileTWT account to access extra features not included with the free site. In addition to being able to send private tweets, you can also create friend lists, get upgrade emails, and even bypass the login screen altogether.
You can also follow FileTWT on the Twitter social networking site to stay updated on site upgrades or even contact the site’s creators, who will be more than willing to assist you with any problems you may encounter.
So, if you’re looking for ways to find collaborators or get feedback on your latest document, look no further than FileTWT.

This Guy Loves the Apple Store!
By Thomas Ward
All my life, I have been told that I love my technology just a little too much. Obviously, they’re wrong, seeing as how the man in the video above (known on YouTube as FattySpins) has written a full-length love song utilizing products created for (or used on) Apple computers, including iChat, the iPod line of digital media players, and even Final Cut Pro.
So, my question to you is this: how much do you love the Apple Store? Leave your thoughts and insights in the comments below!

Google Earth Goes Green
By Thomas Ward
One thing I am highly proud of is my active charity work, whether it is donating money to non-profit organizations or volunteering my time to help someone in need. Over the last several years, I have come to work with numerous charities, including the MDA, We Can Solve It, and Charity Water.
Of all the causes I’ve supported over the years, however, none have been more important to me than saving our environment. Over the past year alone, I have implemented ways to harvest rain water, vowed to use less coal-burning energy sources (like electricity), and even converted all of the electric lights in my home to more efficient (and, not to mention, cheaper) compact fluorescent bulbs. Rising above this, however, has been my willingness to educate the population about the impact of climate change on our enviornment which, apparently, has decided to do as well, with the introduction of the Google Earth climate change map.
Introduced in partnership with the Danish government ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Convention (set to be held this December), Google will be implementing a new layer onto its popular Google Earth software, allowing users of the service to view projected climate change patterns up to the year 2011. As of right now, only precipitation and temperature changes can be viewed on the site, though Google claims more information will become available over the next year, including one that will show how different cultures are adapting or working to reverse the effects climate change has held on our environment.
In addition to these Google Earth layers, Google has also partnered with the CNN news network to launch a new YouTube channel that allows climate change activists (like myself) to “raise their voice” on this all-important issue.
For more information on what Google is doing to educate about climate change, be sure to watch this video, narrated by former American Vice-President (and environmental activist) Al Gore:
So, my question to you is this: would seeing a visual representation of the impact your habits have on this planet inspire you to go “green”? Leave your thoughts and insights in the comments below!
